How this is calculated
We divide the wall area by the face size of one brick plus its mortar joint. A standard US modular brick with a 3/8 inch joint works out to about 6.9 bricks per sq ft, and a standard UK brick with a 10 mm joint about 60 per m².
This counts one brick thick. Freestanding garden walls taller than about 2 ft (60 cm) usually need to be two bricks thick, and the double-thickness row covers that.
How much mortar do I need?
As a rough guide, one 80 lb bag of premixed mortar lays about 40 bricks, or one 25 kg bag about 30. Wider joints and uneven bricks use more.
Do brick walls need footings?
Yes. Any freestanding brick wall needs a solid concrete footing below the frost line. Check local building rules for taller walls.
