How this is calculated
We divide the area, plus extra for cuts, by the size of a single tile and round up to whole tiles.
Large-format or patterned tile usually needs more extra, around 15%, because more tiles get cut at edges.
Does grout spacing change the count?
Only slightly. Grout lines make each tile cover a bit more area, so ignoring them keeps you on the safe side.
How much extra for a backsplash?
Use 15% for backsplashes. Outlets, windows and edges mean lots of small cuts.
