How this is calculated
We divide the fence length by the post spacing to get the number of sections. You need one more post than sections, plus an extra post for each gate.
Fences taller than 5 ft (1.5 m) get three rails per section, shorter ones two. Pickets are counted edge to edge along the full length.
How far apart should posts be?
6 to 8 ft (1.8 to 2.4 m) is standard. Closer spacing makes a stronger fence in windy areas.
How deep should posts go?
About one third of the post’s length should be underground, and below the frost line in cold climates. Check local rules, too.
