How this is calculated

We multiply the roof’s footprint, including overhangs, by a pitch factor to get the true sloped surface area. A steeper roof has more surface than the same footprint on a flatter one.

Roofing is sold in squares of 100 sq ft, and most architectural shingles come three bundles to a square. Add about 10% for simple gable roofs and 15% for hips, valleys and dormers.

How do I find my roof pitch?

Hold a level horizontally against a rafter, measure 12 inches along it, then measure straight up to the rafter. That rise in inches is your pitch, such as 6 in 12.

Does this include ridge caps and starter strips?

No. Buy ridge cap shingles by the length of your ridges and hips, and starter strips by the length of your eaves and rakes.
